FairNature – Practical guide to scaling Nature-based Solutions

Description

How can we promote a sustainable and just future while staying within planetary boundaries? Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are part of the answer – NbS aim to develop solutions that work with nature to support both society and the environment.

Many pilot NbS exist, but few are implemented on a wide scale. NbS can involve a wide range of diverse stakeholders: local cooperatives, multinational cooperations, small and medium-sized enterprises, government ministries, municipalities, farmers, civil society, and many others. This diversity makes the scaling of NbS across different contexts and places a complex challenge, where some stakeholders may benefit but others lose. Such concerns are likely to be amplified when scaling NbS. Therefore, it is essential to consider issues of justice and fairness.

In FairNature, we use an innovative process called ‘transdisciplinary reflexive learning’, where stakeholders and scientists go on a journey of learning to bring fair scaling of NbS into practice in six European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Hungary, the Netherlands and Spain).

The goal of FairNature is to develop practical guide for scaling NbS that benefit both people and nature in a just way.
