Project description: We are looking for a data scientist for the ERC funded project “Local Indicators of Climate Change Impacts. The Contribution of Local Knowledge to Climate Change Research” (www.licci.eu). The research project aims to bring insights from indigenous and local knowledge to climate research by 1) providing data on local climate change impacts on natural and on human systems and 2) testing hypotheses on the global distribution of locally-perceived indicators of climate change impacts. The position will be located at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) (www.uab.cat/icta/).


Functions: The data scientist will 1) organize, systematize, pre-process and store data according to the LICCI project Data Management Plan (including security concerns and confidentiality standards) and 2) provide assistance to the LICCI team to clean, merge, analyze, and visualize data. Specific tasks include:


(1) Manage and pre-process the master database of the LICCI project.
(2) Commission and decommission data sets.
(3) Process confidential data and information according to the LICCI project Data Management Plan.
(4) Help analyze and visualize results using statistical techniques and help interpret data and develop reports.
(5) Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets.
(6) Support initiatives for data integrity and normalization.
(7) Develop data visualization products for scientific manuscripts and dissemination.


Profile: Candidates should have a strong background (academic degree or previous experience) in data science, information management, statistics, or related fields. Candidates should have a) strong knowledge of and experience with common data formats (json, csv), b) knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages (Python and R), c) strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize and analyze significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy, and innovative statistical analysis, and d) understanding of metadata standards. Candidates should be fluent in written and spoken English. Knowledge working with relational databases (preferably PostgreSQL) is a plus.


Contract terms: The data manager/scientist will be hired between April 2021 and September 2022 (18 months) by ICTA-UAB. The annual gross salary is of 31.632,882 €/year gross (35 hours/week), and includes social security (i.e., health and pension benefits).

The selection process has 2 phases: A) Curricular evaluation. Consists of 1) an updated CV and 2) a cover letter that should include a personal statement explaining the applicant interest in the project and the name, position and e-mail contact of three potential referees. The Candidates that do not fill the requirements will not be considered. B) Oral interview (for pre-selected candidates).
